Are you ever too old for world travel?
One of the benefits of my Fathom #ImpactTravel adventure was meeting interesting people from all over the world. My first day at sea, I got to know Lillian. Lillian is 77 years old and doesn’t let her age stop her from experiencing world travel.
Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Lillian now lives in Santa Monica, California. She has been a widow for 17 years. Her friends think that Lillian likes to live by herself because she is used to it. But Lillian says, “I really don’t.” According to Lillian, “you have to happy with yourself first,” and for her, that means embarking on world travel. Lillian has traveled to many, many places around the globe and continues to learn many, many life lessons on her world travels, by seeing how other people live.
Recently, Lillian traveled by herself to Cambodia!! She tried to get friends and family to join her on this world travel adventure but no one wanted to go. Undaunted, Lillian signed up to travel with a tour, not knowing anyone else in the group. That is one brave lady!!
What impressed Lillian the most on her world travel trip to Cambodia was the children. She fell in love with the Cambodian children. Lillian noticed that while they were obviously very poor in material goods, that did not stop them from being happy. Each day, she watched a group of children fetch water from a hole to take back to their family.
All along the way, the children were laughing and carrying on, obviously happy with what they had even if according to our standards, it wasn’t very much.
From this experience, Lillian thought about how much we take for granted in the United States and how we can learn from the Cambodian children to be appreciative with what we have.
I ran in to Lillian several times throughout my Fathom journey week. She always had a smile on her face and a kiss for my cheek. She appreciated the opportunity that this world travel trip gave her to not only see the Dominican Republic but give back to the people in Puerto Plata.
We ate breakfast together before we disembarked from our world travel trip with Fathom, reminiscing on how much we saw and did the past week. I’m not sure where Lillian will be traveling to next but wherever she goes, her age will not hold her back in being fearless with her world travels.
