I didn’t live through the Great Depression so I can’t say I do this because I learned from my past. I do it because I support #EarthDay and I want my investments to last. (And I’m a penny-pincher)
As I have gotten older, one treat I have allowed for myself is to purchase high end cosmetics and skin care items. Gone are the days of Maybelline and Cover Girl. Today, I have no problem rationalizing purchasing great skin care products from Origins and make up from Too Faced, Urban Decay and it Cosmetics. Wisdom and experience has proven time and again, great results have a great price. If I want to have a skin care or make up product that truly does what it says –I must be willing to pay a higher price for that product that really does work.
Since I consciously make the decision to pay that higher price, I am also consciously paying diligent attention on how I use up those products. There is no way I am not going to waste one precious, expensive drop or swoosh of a brush, I take great care in making sure that I get every penny out of these purchases before I go and expend another wad of cash to replace them.
Unfortunately, most of the time, the packaging of these high end products don’t lend themselves to following one of the primary mantras of #EarthDay: Use It Up. Tiny tubes and push down dispensers can be greedy in holding on to their wares. Just because a pump won’t release any more lotion or a brush can’t sweep up any more powder, that won’t stop me from using every last bit.
Warning: I will do all it takes to make sure I get every last drop of expensive skin care and cosmetics.
Example 2: Once the pump stops working, you’d think that that the pump would just screw off to get the last bit of lotion. Not quite. I got better results by also taking a pair of scissors and cutting off the bottom to get inside the tube.
Being thrifty is a little messy. But by taking these measures, I had enough product for another 2-3 weeks!! Now, that’s what I call a double benefit: not only getting my money’s worth but being a good citizen of the planet too!!
Happy #EarthDay 2015
