No need to break the bank to stock up on Grammie essentials when there’s a quality thrift store close by.
While I received compensation for this post, the thoughts and opinions expressed are all mine.
Memorable grandchild visits don’t just happen. They require some preparation and having lots of stuff on hand like age appropriate toys, books, craft supplies, and movies along with practical items like kid-friendly plates and cups. It kills me knowing that once upon a time, I had all these essentials for my own kids but ended up giving most of it away as they grew up. I’ve learned quickly that replacing these items for the grandkids can be costly. Thus my dilemma: how to have an adequate Grammie stash without going broke in the process.
My solution: thrift store shopping at my new local Deseret Industries store in Fontana, California. Known as the thrift store chain where “Secondhand is Done Right,” Deseret Industries also sells new low price goods including blankets, sheets, men’s suits, mattresses, bed frames, and dressers.
Deseret Industries is not only a thrift store where you can donate and shop; it is also a true community partner, providing job training and humanitarian aid both locally and around the world. In 2014, Deseret Industries provided more than 75,000 community grants (vouchers to needy families for free merchandise from DI, granted through partnerships with other charitable organizations in the communities served by DI) and helped place more than 3,500 individuals in permanent, full-time employment. So, when I purchase my Grammie goods at Deseret Industries, I’m also supporting a worthwhile cause and that is a great feeling.
In the past, I have shied away from thrift store shopping because they always felt dirty, were disorganized, and the goods sold were usually old and worn out. No way would I ever let my grandkids around that stuff. But at Deseret Industries, that wasn’t the case at all. The racks and shelves were clean, attractive, and orderly. Even the floors were shiny. I was particularly impressed with their staff. They were friendly, eager to help, and courteous. And the best part? The prices were such a bargain!! Shopping at Deseret Industries was such a pleasant experience!! What Grammie treasures did I purchase on my first visit?
The grand total? Just $25.00!! What a deal!! I loved that I got a lot for so little and my grandkids are going to love having something new to play with at Grammie’s house.
The Fontana Deseret Industries store has the capacity to house more than 40,000 items with a replacement rate of 2,000-3,000 new goods put on the floor each day. That’s a lot of great reasons to keep going back over and over again — not just to keep my Grammie shelves stocked– but for all around my house too!
