On a recent visit to my daughter and son-in-law in Idaho, that was the predicament we faced. Obviously, going outside to frolic in the snow was out of the question. Brrrrrr. We were looking for an indoor activity to keep us busy and warm. Craft time. My daughter was in need of a birthday gift for a friend. so we decided to make a body scrub from a recipe I had seen demonstrated. It was easy to make and didn’t take much time. What is great about this body scrub is that it is made from all natural ingredients. All the better for a special self- indulgence type gift.
What do you do when it is NEGATIVE 17 degrees outside?
Citrus Salt Scrub
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup to 1 cup coarse sea salt
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 teaspoon orange zest
Melt coconut oil in the microwave until it becomes liquid. Start at 20 seconds and see how it is doing. If it needs to be melted a little more, do it at 10 second intervals. When it is melted, add in sea salt. You want the mixture to be grainy and solid, not runny. Add the two citrus zests. In case you didn’t know, the “zest” is the peel of the fruit. Grate the peel fine. When you add the zest, the salt mixture will turn a golden yellow. Your scrub should begin to smell like citrus. If you want a deeper odor or a deeper color, add a little more zest. Place mixture in a sealed jar and label. Use it in the shower to exfoliate and soften your skin. Be careful though. Residue from the scrub on the bottom of your shower will make it slippery.
Since my daughter has an art degree,(and because she made it for a gift), she couldn’t help getting all creative with the packaging. She wanted to keep the natural theme going and came up with a cute organic label and tie. Impressive. I know her friend is going to love it.
Have you ever used a homemade body scrub? It really does feel amazing when rubbing it in and leaves you feeling soft and supple. The perfect skin remedy for dry, cold weather. Ahhhh……
